Frequently Asked Questions

Obtaining a driver's license for teens is more complicated than it was a few years ago. The DMV is concerned with the safety of our teens (and the public) and this is reflected in the requirements to get a license and the following probationary period.

Here are some of the questions that have been asked by students in the past:

What do I need to do first to get my permit?

The first thing that you need to do is enroll in a DMV licensed Driver Training (behind-the-wheel) program with a driving school. After making payment you will be given a white certificate that shows the DMV that you are enrolled.

What else do I need to take with me to get my permit?

You will need to take your social security card, a original (not a copy) birth certificate or evidence of legal presence, and $26 for the fee. You will also need to fill out an application. This application must be filled out by both parents or in some cases the adult who has legal custody.

After I get my permit what do I need to do next?

Once you get your permit call the driving school to set up an appointment for your first driving lesson with an instructor. Note that you will need to have your first (1st) lesson in order to "validate" your permit. This means that you will then be able to driver on public roads or areas open to the public legally. You are not legal to drive on public roads/areas until you have the first lesson.

What will I need to do once I have my first lesson?

You'll need to qualify to get your driver's license now. You will need to have your permit for six (6) months. You will also need to practice with an adult 25 years old or older who possesses a valid "California" driver's license. You must practice a minimum of 50 hours (40 day and 10 at night). You will also need to complete the driver training program of 6 hours behind-the-wheel.

Do I take the DMV road test in the driving school vehicle?

Normally the student takes his/her road test in their own vehicle. If you like you may take the road test in our vehicle. I require that at least one hour lesson be taken in our vehicle before the road test. This is to be sure that the driver has sufficient driving skills to safely take the road test and not damage the vehicle.
